myah and the pleasure of telling stories behind the songs

We can never get enough of myah. The singer now lives intensely the life of an independent artist in effervescent Los Angeles, which is where everyone in the world wants to be. But it wasn’t always easy. “Being an independent artist is super tough. I don’t profit from my music at the moment, so I have to work a day job just to pay for the music I make“, reveals myah.

myah: storytelling through each song

With a collection of simply delicious singles under her belt, myah is preparing her first album which, according to her, will be long, with more than 15 tracks. The result not only of her creativity as a songwriter, but also of the style of telling stories behind each song, a peculiarity that has led her to be compared to none other than Taylor Swift. “I’ve been compared to Taylor Swift a few times which is a huge compliment – she’s the biggest Artist in the world“, recognizes myah.

Sure, I’m older than Billie Eillish and Olivia Rodrigo, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

myah

Although her musical style automatically competes with that of fashionable singers like Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor, myah understands that she has the advantage of her longevity. “The life experiences I’ve lived have given me more to write about, so I’m thankful for where I am now and I hope people can relate to it too“, says myah. One good example is the single “Everything” (bellow) a cutting ballad about the possible end of a relationship, masterfully outlined by its choruses – impossible not to think of songs like “Love Story”. Or even better.

2 7 things about myah

RC: Hey myah, nice to see you, from where are you answering this interview?

m: Hey There! Same to you. I’m in Los Angeles.

RC: You write songs from the perspective of your own experiences – or at least it’s what we think after listening to them. No need to say that a writing style Taylor Swift helped consolidate. As an artist, do you think her work is important to you? Are you a swiftie?

m: I definitely write from my own experiences – there’s a story behind every song. I hope one day I get to tell those too. I’ve been compared to Taylor Swift a few times which is a huge compliment – she’s the biggest Artist in the world. Her storytelling skills are expert-level – if anyone knows how to build lore it’s Taylor Swift. I wouldn’t say I’m necessarily a Swiftie because I don’t know all the secrets behind her music like her die-hard fans do, but I grew up listening to Taylor Swift so I admire her a lot, she’s the queen of an empire.

RC: You are an independent artist, you even sell your own show tickets…. In your opinion, what’s the most challenging task about making music you believe but without any money?

m: Being an independent artist is super tough. I don’t profit from my music at the moment, so I have to work a day job just to pay for the music I make. I’m not signed to a label or have management, so I think the hardest thing is having to be your own Manager, Publicist, Label, Social Media Manager the list goes on…it’s a full-time job. I’m constantly trying to push my music, make social content, upload it to all the social media platforms, try to book my own shows, produce my music videos…it’s a lot of work and it’s pretty exhausting, but I know it’s necessary to try to break into the industry so it is what it is.

RC: You have been releasing single after single and each one of them sound like a book chapter. When will you release your beloved album?

m: Oh wow, I love that. I suppose they do feel a bit like a book chapter, I’m glad. My album will be about 14 – 16 tracks. It’s a big album – all the songs tie together in a way that’s very special and personal. I’m hoping we’ll be done in August and can distribute it in September – but I need enough fans to be able to drop it. So we’ll see how the summer goes.

RC: By the nature of your songs, which Id like to call “alt.pop with a twist of rock” you’re competing with a lot of younger women (and men), like Olivia Rodrigo…. Are you really looking for a chance in their spotlight too?

m: I don’t think I’m looking for their spotlight. I’d like to think I’ll find my own. I have big dreams like every artist – I’d like to play a big stadium tour and do Coachella, be on a Late Night Show…will I ever get there? Maybe, maybe not. But I’ll at least try. Age shouldn’t be a factor in whether or not your music takes off because everyone’s journey is different. Sure, I’m older than Billie Eillish and Olivia Rodrigo, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. The life experiences I’ve lived have given me more to write about, so I’m thankful for where I am now and I hope people can relate to it too. All I can control is the here and now, where my career goes is up to the fans.

RC: We’re from Brazil, have you even been here, do you know any of our food, music, culture you’d like to share with us?

m: I’ve never been to Brazil, but I would LOVE to go! Maybe a live show?? Let’s make it happen! I’m ready. Teach me about your culture, I’d love to experience it.

RC: Thank you!!!

m: Thanks for having me 🙂 I appreciate it so much!

You can find myah’s music on any streaming device.
